Dr Ebenezer Apake, permanent secretary of the Department of Health, received the vaccine on behalf of the state government in a brief ceremony in Jalingo on Thursday. Apake described the vaccine’s arrival as a bold step towards tackling the growing wave of deadly viruses in the state. “To win the war against the pandemic, 80% of the population must be vaccinated. “I want to call on people, especially frontline health workers who will benefit from the first tranche, to take advantage of the vaccination. “Although the vaccine is here with us, we have to stick to the protocol of social distancing and wearing the face mask,” he said. The Taraba State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action to press home their demands. According to ASUU Chairman, Samuel Shitaa, the union’s demands include the non-availability of the pension scheme, earned academic allowances, perimeter fencing among several others in the institution. The declaration of the strike is coming a few days after the state government paid off the four months’ salary arrears owed academic staff of the institution. “The outstanding salaries are not the issues in contention, because we are agitating for our rights. With the second wave of the COVID-19 outbreak in Nigeria, WHO is helping the government leverage the existing Acute Flaccid Paralysis Automatic Detection and Reporting System (AVADAR) to strengthen community-based disease surveillance.
