IOM, UNHCR: Latest Mediterranean tragedy underscores need for search and rescueThe International Organization for Migration (IOM) and UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency, are deeply saddened by the latest loss of life in the central Mediterranean after the capsize of two boats off the Tunisian coast on Tuesday March 9. At least 39 people drowned in a shipwreck off the island of Kerkennah. One hundred and thirty-four survivors, most of them from Côte d’Ivoire, were brought ashore by the Tunisian coast guard. Rescue operations are still ongoing, hampered yesterday by difficult weather conditions. A second shipwreck took place off the coast of the city of Jebeniana in the governorate of Sfax. The boat had 70 people on board, including four children, all of whom were taken ashore. These are the latest in a series of shipwrecks off the Tunisian coast.
