Man jailed three years for raping teenager

Justice Sybil Nwaka-Gbagi of the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has sentenced one Henry Egesi to three years’ imprisonment for raping a 19-year-old girl.

Egesi was arraigned on one count of rape on May 9, 2019 by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Lagos State, Ms Titilayo Shitta-Bay, told the court that the offence was contrary to Section 260 (1) of the Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State, 2015.

She noted that evidence tendered before the court confirmed that the defendant had unlawful carnal knowledge of the victim.

Shitta-Bay urged the court to show no leniency in sentencing of the defendant.

Delivering her judgment, Justice Nwaka-Gbagi held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced Egesi to three years’ imprisonment.
