The long-term development of football in East Africa received a substantial boost with the inauguration of a new FIFA Regional Development Office (www.FIFA.com) in Kigali, Rwanda, following a signing and opening ceremony that included the FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Rwandan Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Vincent Biruta, Sports Minister Aurore Mimosa Munyangaju and Rwandan Football Federation (FERWAFA) President Jean-Damascene Sekamana.
Other football dignitaries also attended, including the president of the Central African Football Associations (CECAFA), Wallace Karia, Célestin Yanindji, the president of the Central African Republic Football Association and the presidents of the member associations of the FOFA of the region.
“I would like to thank President Paul Kagame and the government of Rwanda for facilitating the opening of this office, as it sets the stage for us at the FIFA level to be able to help all the associations at the regional level to develop football,” said the FIFA. Said the president. “Infrastructure, competitions, development and education – these are the key areas that FIFA is focusing on, and the task of this office will be to implement the FIFA Forward program in the region.
“This means supporting development, coordinating the program, helping organize competitions for boys and girls, fostering women’s football, ensuring that the investment that FIFA is making is channeled to the right place, and making sure that East African football will shine in the international stage. The talent is here. The passion is here. And together with the federations and governments of this part of the world, we are creating the conditions for a better future. “
In 2017, FIFA made the decision to establish FIFA Regional Development Offices around the world to better serve its member associations and be closer to their needs. Four of these offices are located in Africa, namely Dakar in Senegal, Johannesburg in South Africa and the one that will soon be inaugurated in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo.
“The Rwanda Football Federation appreciates the establishment of this office in the region, which demonstrates the scope of FIFA’s commitment to the development of football in Africa, and we are deeply grateful that Kigali has been chosen to host the this FIFA Regional Development Office, ”said FERWAFA President Jean-Damascene Sekamana. “We are very grateful to the Government of Rwanda and FIFA for reaching an agreement to host the regional office in Rwanda. By approving this agreement, the Government of Rwanda demonstrated its visionary leadership and its goal of gradually achieving an acceptable standard of living for society in all sectors, including football and sport in general. “
Subsequently, the President of FIFA met with the President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, to discuss the development of football in the country and in the region.
“I was delighted to meet Mr. Kagame again. He is a truly devoted soccer fan who is committed to promoting sport and soccer as a symbol of peace and a means of promoting important social values, especially among the youth of the community, ”said the FIFA President. “From FIFA’s perspective, we also appreciate the support that the Rwandan government is providing to FERWAFA and football at the local level. He is helping lay a solid foundation for football to flourish in Rwanda. ”
