One group with the hashtag #OccupyLekkiTollGate promised to demonstrate at the tollgate against the decision by a judicial panel which handed control of the tollgate back to the Lekki Concession Company.
The campaigners say the tollgate ought to remain shut until justice is served regarding those who were allegedly shot dead by soldiers of the Nigerian Army on October 20, 2020, during the EndSARS protest against police brutality and bad governance in Nigeria.
The other group running the #DefendLagos campaign are in opposition to the protest, stressing that they don’t want a repeat of the #EndSARS protest of October 2020 which led to the destruction of public and private properties in Lagos.
A campaigner of the #OccupyLekkiTollgate planned protest, Wole Olubanji, who spoke during a PUNCH Live programme tackled the #DefendLagos group.
He accused them of being sponsored by state agents, stressing that such was witnessed during the #EndSARS protest which saw hoodlums attack the protesters.
When asked how both groups will be differentiated on Saturday, he said, “It is not only one person that will get there first. It’s going to be a mass. It’s going to be a gigantic protest. So, if we get there, people will identify themselves.”
Concerning the opposing protest, he said, “Let them do their protest and let we the #OccupyLekkiTollgate protesters do ours without any altercation.”
On his own part, the #DefendLagos campaigner, Olusoga Owoeye rubbished the planned protest of the #OccupyLekkiTollGate campaigners. He accused them of being insurrectionists while recounting the arson allegedly committed by their members during the #EndSARS protest in Lagos.
On how his group will be identified on Saturday, he said, “Don’t worry about all those things. Just watch out. Some of us are veterans of protests. Some of these boys who are causing this crisis have never led any protest in their life.”
When asked to speak on the allegation that the government is sponsoring his group, Owoeye said, “I don’t answer that type of question. For me, those allegations are stupid, as far as I’m concerned.”
