Police arrest three vigilantes, raid office in Rivers

The police in Rivers State on Thursday arrested three members of a local vigilance group, Onelga Security and Advisory Planning Committee, at Nkpor community, Rumuolomeni, in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The arrest, it was gathered, followed a reported case of attempted murder from one Clifford Woko after members of the vigilance group allegedly brutalised him for failing to pay a fee, termed, ‘Marching Ground’, for a parcel of land.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the vigilantes had earlier declined an invitation extended to them by the human rights desk of the Rivers State Police Command, which received a complaint on the matter.

A resident, Clifford Woko, who also claimed to be a victim of torture in the hands of the vigilantes, demanded justice for the victim.

A spokesman for the police in the state, SP Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the arrest.

He said, “We arrested three vigilantes this morning, while others escaped, based on a complaint of attempted murder. As we speak, they are undergoing investigation.”
