Police arrest Rivers varsity guard who defiled 16-year-old girl

The police in Rivers State have confirmed the arrest of a 60-year-old man, Mgbechi Mekwe, for allegedly defiling 16-year-old girl in Aluu, Ikwerre Local Governmemt Area of Rivers State.

Recall that a widow and mother of the girl, Mrs Kindness Edwin, had accused Mekwe, a security workers at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education in Rumuokumeni, Rivers State, of abducting and raping her daughter after she (widow) turned down his marriage proposal.

Edwin had said the suspect went after his daughter, whom he said discouraged her mother from accepting his advances.

The widow told our correspondent that the suspect was arrested by local vigilantes and handed over to the police.

When contacted, the spokesman of the state police command, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the arrest.

He said, “He will be transferred to the State Criminal and Investigation Department on the order of the Commissioner of Police.”

In another development, gunmen have killed a young man travelling on motorcycle on the East-West road in the Emohua Local Government Area.

A community source said the victim hails from Ibaa community and was heading to Elele Alimini in the same LGA before the gunmen attacked him.
