A witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the gang attempted to access the utility and residential areas.
“They came with weapons with which they attempted to break in before the residents’ association mobilised members to resist the invasion,” he added.
The Secretary of PORA, Dotun Adekambi, alleged that the invasion was fallout of the disagreement the estate had with the property developer, Lekki Gardens.
He said the association had petitioned the police about the incident.
Adekambi said, “We have made a criminal complaint to the police against Lekki Gardens for illegal power distribution and resale business. We have made it clear that estate assets should be run by the estate association or their appointed facility management company.
“These are the issues for which the developer has resorted to violence. We have written to the police to notify them of the plan by the association to self-manage the estate and we have also written to the developer, who rather than engage us for a smooth handover, issued us threats.”
Based on the petition, the police were said to have visited the estate and advised both parties to report for a meeting, which did not hold.
Efforts by PUNCH Metro to reach the Chief Engagement Officer of Lekki Gardens, Romeo Akinwande, proved abortive, as a call made to his telephone number rang out.
Subsequent efforts to contact Akinwande didn’t go through and messages sent to his two telephone numbers were not delivered, as it was suspected that he had barred our correspondent’s number.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the police would maintain the peace.
He said, “We are aware of the conflict between the two parties. The DPO Ilasan is on top of the matter as she has invited them to a meeting, but they didn’t turn up. The police will do the needful in maintaining peace in the area. We urge them to accept the mediation process and embrace peace.”
