Chukwu is a councillorship aspirant in the forthcoming local government elections in the state.
Scores of Rundele indigenes, including family members of the victim, in a video on social media seen by our correspondent, raised the alarm over the alleged kidnap of Chukwu, whom they described as outspoken and easygoing.
Some of the women in the video expressed fear he might have been killed.
“Is it bad to be a good person? We saw him on Monday night and Tuesday morning. Where have they taken him to now? Have they killed him? Let the government come and help us find our brother,” one of them said.
The residents, who displayed his photograph, said he was last seen on Tuesday, January 26, 2021, noting that his disappearance might not be unconnected with the issues he had with the vigilance group in Rundele, as some members of the group were alleged to be involved in illegal oil bunkering.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent on the telephone on Sunday that Chukwu might have been abducted for speaking out against the illicit activities of the group.
“We cannot reach him on phone and all efforts to trace his whereabouts have not yielded any result. We have reported to the Rumuji Police Station. So, the police are aware.
“Clearly, we are suspecting the vigilance group because he had issues with them before his disappearance. We are calling on the government and the police to help get him back,” he added.
The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident, adding that the police were making efforts to ensure the safe release of the aspirant.
He said, “A case of a missing person was reported by one Friday Chukwu about his younger brother, Hanson Chukwu. Investigation is ongoing to get to the root of the matter and get those involved.”
