Police probe 60-year-old guard over kidnapping, defilement of girl, 16

Dennis Naku, Port Harcourt

A widow, Mrs Kindness Edwin, has accused a security guard at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education of kidnapping and defiling her 16-year-old daughter in Aluu, in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Edwin alleged that the 60-year-old had been making marriage advances towards her, which she declined.

The widow said the suspect then abducted and raped her daughter.

She said, “He came to ask for my hand in marriage. When I saw his character, I declined. He said it’s either I marry him or he kills me.

“I thought it was a joke. So, he started chasing me and my daughter. He said my daughter was the one that asked me not to marry him.

“Last Wednesday, January 13, he went to my daughter’s office at 6pm and kidnapped her with his boys, raped my daughter and wounded her.

“Since that day, I didn’t see my daughter until Friday evening when I saw her and she told me what happened. That girl was a virgin.”

Edwin said she reported the matter at the Aluu Police Station.

The Coordinator of Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, Prince Wiro, accused the suspect’s employers of shielding him.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Mrs Ngozi Okiridu, said the matter was a “domestic issue”.

She said, “Whatever happened is a domestic issue between him and his wife in their village. We have not seen him because he doesn’t come to work again. The police have been here several times, but they didn’t see him.”
