Rabiu Fawale, a farmer from Ilobu, Irepodun Local Government Area of Osun State, is the father of Rauf, a police corporal, who recently died as a result of injuries he sustained after he was allegedly attacked by some personnel of the Department of State Services. The grieving father speaks to BOLA BAMIGBOLA about the tragic incident
Your son, Rauf, a police corporal, died recently after he was allegedly attacked by three DSS operatives. How did you receive the news?
I was on my farm when I got a call on Saturday, January 16, 2021 that my son was injured. I learnt that he was immediately rushed to Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital. I immediately rushed down to the hospital. When I arrived at the hospital, I observed he was bleeding from the ear. I was told he had been treated in one hospital earlier.
Was he further treated at LAUTECH?
I told them we should do an X-ray. We did it and the X-ray showed that he was hit on the head. We tried our best to save him, but he eventually died. I took N2m from a money doubler for treatment, yet we lost him. An operation was performed on him. He later died at a private hospital while being treated.
What were you told happened before he was attacked?
I was told some DSS operatives attacked him. One of those that attacked him is called David Olowoporoku.
Who took him to hospital after the attack?
I don’t really know the people who took him to the hospital. What I was told was that he was taken to LAUTECH after the attack. He was later brought back home by his friend. When we observed his condition, after he was brought home, we decided to return him to hospital.
Where was he attacked?
I was told he was attacked at a birthday party of one of his bosses in the office. I don’t know what really happened at the event. But I was told my son was attacked by three DSS men. I believed his death was not unconnected with a promotion he got recently.
What made you think the attack might be connected to his promotion?
My son told me about the promotion and said some people (his colleagues) were not happy about the promotion.
When did he join the police?
He joined the police about three years ago after he completed his education.
How old was he?
He was 35 years old.
Was he married?
Yes, he was married and had three children. His last child is about one month old now.
Has he been buried?
Yes, the police brought his corpse for burial on Sunday.
How do you want justice to be done in this case?
I want Nigerians to rise up and help me get justice for my son. Rauf was the one taking care of me. I have seven other children, but he is my first child. The perpetrators should be identified and they must be made to pay for their actions.
